St Marteen - Paradise (for Aviation Enthusiasts)
Published on ABC News, November 12, 2011
Usually, when we plan our perfect vacation in a small Caribbean island, we can't wait to get away to the quiet beach, surrendered by clear water and palm trees... Well, Except for St. Marteen, this place is an all different ball game, where the airport is pretty much the main attraction.
There is no other place in the world, where people can almost touch the wheels of an aircraft seconds before it touches the runway. Not just aviation enthusiasts can enjoy the situation - Beer in one hand, camera in the second hand, while hanging in one of the beach bars. Flight schedule instead of menus and air traffic control is broadcasted instead of music.
But while all planes that arrive must also go, the above is only half of the fun. Departing planes that are setting on the runway before take-off, can produce jet blast winds of more than 100 mph, Blasting whoever not holding the airport fence down to the water.
